My Kitchen Update Reveal

I’m so excited to share my kitchen update! This spring we took on a mini kitchen renovation and updated both the backsplash and paint finish of our kitchen cabinets.

Our “old” kitchen was super dark. We only have one source of natural light for the living room/kitchen area so I knew from the start that I wanted to paint the kitchen white to brighten things up. To top it off our original backsplash was a dark mosaic of green shades that just did not look good.

The Backsplash

We started with the backsplash and went with mini subway tiles because they matched the original back splash almost perfectly. So perfectly that we didn’t have to do much tile cutting. We went with these from Home Depot in the glossy porcelain finish because I wanted the kitchen to reflect the light.

For grout, we contemplated going with a dark grout which is super popular right now, but since we applied the backsplash ourselves we knew the lines wouldn’t be perfectly straight. If we went with black it would accentuate any imperfections. On the flip side, I didn’t want white because I thought that looked too blah – so we went with a light grey called Platinum. We loved it – it adds just enough contrast but isn’t too light!

The Cabinets

For paint we went with Benjamin Moore Decorator’s White. We wanted to avoid the white being too creamy, but also not too stark. Based on the final results we are happy with our choice.

To finish the look we also decided to change our cabinet hardware and went with this simple dark option in vintage bronze from Menards.

The Painters

We hired Giant Painters to paint the kitchen cabinets and they did such a fantastic job. When I was doing my research I went with them because they had amazing Google Reviews and offered us the most competitive quote!

The paint job took about a week and we started by having Scott, the owner, come to our home and give us a quote. Derek was our main painter for the week long job and did fantastic! What I loved is that they took the cabinet doors off-site and did the painting in their studio to keep the sanding and therefore dust to a minimum.

When painting in our home – they kept everything so clean! They even put up a plastic wall to make sure the fumes and any dust from the frame dusting didn’t get everywhere. Not many painters go to these lengths to keep things so clean while the job is being done.

Every morning the painters came right on time and when we saw the painted doors I couldn’t believe how smooth they were! You would never know that these cabinets are painted.

It’s been a few weeks and the doors are holding up amazingly – no chips and I can wash any stains from the cabinets without damaging the paint. For a future paint job I 100% recommend Giant Painters and their services. They are amazing.

So now without further ado here is the big kitchen update reveal!
