One of my favorite parts of summer is the the farmer’s market. They have a community centric, locally inspired atmosphere that I think harkens back to they way people used to buy their food. Before the vast warehouse-like stores took over, before 86 different brands of pasta appeared on the shelves, before the florescent lighting. Back when food was just food and when you knew the individual who sold you your dinner.
I think a lot of people share my view which is why farmer’s markets are such a hit. They tap into something that we humans need – community. And what better way to gather and connect than over food!? Many towns now feature their own summertime markets and I’m lucky enough to live close to my own, and by close I mean across the street. Every Sunday I look forward to walking down to the market to browse the colorful stalls and almost always bump into someone I know. I love it.
Here are some pretty pictures I’ve taken from my local farmer’s market adventures – as you will see I find fresh food (especially fruit) to be just so pretty!
And lastly I wanted to share an amazing and easy recipe I found for a Lemon Blueberry Tart. I’ve made this tart from a boxful of blueberries that I bought at the farmer’s market and it was delicious! The recipe is technically for “lemon bars” but I put the dessert in a tart pan and thus call it a tart. Head on over to Lick The Bowl Good for the recipe.
