I’ve gotten a lot of requests for more local content and as a Chicago based blogger, I figured I’d share one of my favorite restaurants in the city. In the past I’ve written about The Allis because I love the vibe and ambience of the space, but when it comes to food Ema might just be my favorite.
Located at River North (42 W. Illinois), Ema is a Mediterranean/California style restaurant that serves fresh, healthy food. It opened in 2016 and is just a few blocks from my office so its become one of my “go to” spots.
The Ambiance
Light and airy. Those are the two words I’d use to describe the space. When walking in from a cold Chicago day, you feel like you’ve walked back into summer. Everything feels fresh. Think unbleached wood, marble topped tables, and a leafy green ceiling with some string lights brightening up the space. In the summer they have an outdoor patio surrounded by lush greenery.
The Food
The heart of the menu focuses on dips and spreads. My favorite way to eat! Varieties of hummus, fresh greens, and grilled veggies are all over the menu. My favorite are the Charred Eggplant and Toasted Almond & Garlic Spreads. They all come with house made pita bread that is seasoned to perfection.
My go to meal is the grilled chicken kebab. Whenever I eat out I usually leave with a to go box because I can never finish a meal. Well Ema is where I make an exception, that’s how good the food is. I finish everything on my plate!
Last but not least, I have to talk about the brussel sprouts. I challenge you to find better brussel sprouts in this city – they are literally the best in all of Chicago. Don’t believe me? Go try them and leave a comment below. I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Thank you Dee – that’s exactly why I love it ! Heavy food and ambiance don’t sit well with me and my digestive system haha ! 😀😀
