I’ve always loved the simple minimalism of a silhouette. A few years ago I made some for me and Ted as DIY decor piece for our home, and now that William is arrived I had to make a baby silhouette for him! It’s super super easy and you probably have all the supplies in your home already.
DIY Silhouette Supplies:
- Photos of the baby you want to make a silhouette of – make sure you have a good profile!
- Black cardstock – make sure the paper is thick so its cuts well and holds small edges. I wouldn’t use regular construction paper
- Sheet of cardstock in any color of your choice to create the backdrop for the silhouettes. I use just regular art paper used for sketching.
- Cute frame
- Sharp scissors
- Painters tape
Directions
The hardest part about this DIY is sizing your photos, but I actually have a trick and use my iPad. All you do is pull up the profile picture to your desired size, turn up the brightness, and lightly trace the image onto a piece of white printer paper with a pencil.
From there I carefully cut out the silhouette on my usual white printer paper. I then use painters tape to tape the newly cut silhouette to my black card stock and then cut once again. I’m sure there are more elegant ways to do it but it works for me and I think the likeness is pretty accurate!
That’s it really. Just go slow and be meticulous with your cutting. I love how classic and personal these look. They would also make great gifts!
