When I was adding things to my registry I found a cute blue pom pom mobile on Amazon that was being sold for $100. I don’t know what I was thinking since that’s a crazy ridiculous amount of money to spend on what is essentially a hoop, strings and some pom poms. So a few weeks later I came to my senses and thought out of all of the nursery items I needed, a mobile would be something I could make. Plus I really wanted to do a DIY for the nursery.
The hardest part of this DIY Baby Mobile project was just having the patience to balance the mobile. Once you overcome that its the easiest and most affordable little thing to make! I love having some DIY elements in my nursery. So read on to see how I did it.
DIY Baby Mobile Materials
- Pom Poms – I got these from a close girlfriend. Her baby gift to me was wrapped in a ribbon of these yarn pom poms and the colors were perfect! If you don’t have any – you can get them from any craft store. These ones from Amazon are also a good option!
- Yarn – I had this yarn on hand from my crochet collection so just used that. Make sure its thicker.
- Embroidery Hoop Interior – I bought this six pack on Amazon and will use the rest for future embroidery projects.
That’s it – its a super affordable project as you can see, especially if you’re a crafter and have these sorts of things on hand already.
DIY Baby Mobile Directions
There’s probably a million ways you can do this but I did the following:
- I cut two very long strips of yarn and criss crossed them at the top of the wooden hoop and tied a knot. From there I wrapped each strand of yarn around four equally distanced points around embroidery hoop. From there I tied another knot. (You’ll notice my embroidery hoop is already covered in a different thinner thread – I had tried out a thinner one originally and it did not work so make sure you use a thicker yarn so the pom poms can hang from the yarn)
- Thread your pom poms onto the yarn string . The pom poms I had already had holes in place so it was easy to thread them onto the yarn with the help of a knitting needle. When threading, be contingent of your colors and what order you want your pom poms in. It also helps to have the hoop hanging so you can work on the balance.
- Once threaded and balanced I tied small knots underneath the pom poms thick enough so they wouldn’t slide off.
- I then cute another long string of yarn and wrapped it around the remaining exposed bits of the embroidery hoop for a unified look.
It’s not hard so much as it just takes patience to wrap and balance everything. The final outcome was super cute and I love that its home made!
