Devil’s Lake – A Weekend Comedy Of Errors

Last June when Ted and I went to New Orleans we flew Spirit Airlines. It was my first time using the airline and I remember getting lots of frowns and winces when I told people we were flying Spirit. But honestly, we had no problems – we got there on time and the only surprise I had was that they didn’t serve drinks on the flight. No big deal! So when my friend Sam and I planned a weekend getaway to Minnesota I didn’t think twice about booking Spirit. By now you can probably sense where this story is going…in short…we did not get there and our weekend did not exactly go as planned.

An hour before Ted and I were to board our flight (after packing, after taking off of work, after getting to the airport, after navigating security, after a $40 airport dinner) Spirit Airlines lived up to its reputation and cancelled our flight. Long story short there was nothing Spirit or we could do to get to Minnesota in time. To say Ted and I were upset is an understatement. Not only did we miss out on a fun weekend with friends but we were really looking forward to a weekend spent outdoors. Lately, we’ve both worked a lot and haven’t had a lot of time to enjoy just being outside. So, in an effort to look on the bright side, we made a spontaneous decision to go camping in Devil’s Lake, Wisconsin.

The next day we took a short three hour drive up to Wisconsin and looked forward to a weekend spent outdoors.  Check out the pictures below- the area is so pretty and even hilly considering its still the Midwest! We were able to enjoy a full day of hiking and exploring.

Unfortunately, our camping getaway was also cut short by rain! Rain and camping definitely do not mix as Ted and I experienced after waking up in a puddle of rainwater. The night before we had heard a clap of thunder just as we crawled into our tent for the night, and hoped the storm would pass soon. I have to admit our tent held up very well under the torrential summer storm.  I even enjoyed the unique experience of being in a tent with the sounds of falling rain around me. But after a whole night of storms our tent was no match for the amount of rain that fell and water had seeped in over night. Ted and I were soaked and knew our sleeping gear wouldn’t dry in time for the next night, so we packed up our site and called it a day!

What I loved about the weekend was that even though we had to cut the weekend short due to a cancelled airline and soggy camping gear Ted and I still managed to laugh at the comedy of it all. Even better we discovered a new place to explore and are planning another camping trip to Devil’s Lake in September – hopefully this time with no rain! Who wants to come with?!?!
